Open access is not only about barrier-free access to research by readers, it’s also about barrier-free access by researchers to publishing their research. Barriers to researchers publishing can include high author payment charges (APCs), lack of support to write and publish in one’s native language or about one’s local context, and lack of access to research literature that is in one’s native language and relevant to one’s local context.

ORCID and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) are proud to announce a new set of documentation resources for the ORCID Plugin for OJS, which is freely available in the OJS Plugin Gallery. With this plugin, authors and researchers can ensure their work is properly and thoroughly credited and that their time investment and administrative burden is lessened.

We are retiring the PKP Index as of January 1, 2022. We are no longer accepting new registrations or submissions. The content that is in the Index will be kept as-is, and entirely available to harvest via OAI, until December 31 2021 and archived offline indefinitely by PKP.

The Supreme Court of Canada has issued an important decision in the longstanding dispute between the collective society Access Copyright and York University over paying royalties on course readings. Although the high court did not squarely address the practical effects of the ruling, it affirmed that Access Copyright’s tariffs are not mandatory and that fair dealing can apply in such circumstances.

Despite these challenges, the scholarly community continued to publish important research and broaden the impact of their work. In fact, shrinking institutional budgets inspired renewed interest in open access publishing and supporting open scholarly infrastructure.
