As we continue to evolve, our community remains at the core of everything that we do at DataCite. Our team is committed to delivering our promise of the DataCite mission. Recently we have had some changes in our team. Robin (Product Strategy & Analysis Manager) will be leaving DataCite at the end of August. It is always unfortunate when we lose a DataCite team member and Robin will be missed by us all.

Metadata are essential for finding, accessing, and reusing scholarly content, i.e. to increase the FAIRness [@https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2016.18] of datasets and other scholarly resources.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new persistent identifier (PID) services registry available at https://pidservices.org, a new service to find services built upon different PIDs from core technology providers and those who integrate from across a variety of disciplinary areas.

In May, the Make Data Count team announced that we have received additional funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for work on the Make Data Count (MDC) initiative. This will enable DataCite to do additional work in two important areas: Implement a bibliometrics dashboard that enables bibliometricians – funded by a separate Sloan grant – to do quantitative studies around data usage and citation behaviors.

DataCite is a community of libraries, research institutions, and data centers that house repositories. We often receive questions about how exactly we work with repositories, so we wanted to take this opportunity to answer your top 10 questions. How does DataCite define a repository? We define a repository as a service operated by research organizations, where research materials are stored, managed, and made accessible.

Today, DataCite is very pleased to announce a major update to the DOI Fabrica form. With this update, you can now add metadata for every possible property in the entire DataCite Metadata Schema. While it was always possible to add all of the required properties, you can now also add all of the recommended and optional properties, too. This includes related identifiers, subjects, funding, geolocation, and more.

Today DataCite launches a new API that powers the PID Graph, the graph formed by scholarly resources described by persistent identifiers (PIDs) and the connections between them. The API is powered by GraphQL, a widely adopted Open Source technology that enables queries of this graph, addressing use cases of our community in ways that were not possible before.

As a membership organization, members are at the core of everything we do and it is important that we work collectively on DataCite’s strategy and long term sustainability. Over the last year, following the October 2018 board meeting, we have been working on clarifying and updating DataCite’s membership and fee model.

As a growing global community of 202 members across 42 countries, this year we hosted the Business Meeting of the General Assembly virtually to include as many members of our community as possible. The meeting focused on approving the budget, approving the next steps on the business model, and the Executive Board elections. Along with DataCite’s members, the Executive Board is the governing body of the association.

As the world continues to feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to reliable scientific information is more important than ever. DataCite’s mission is to provide the means to create, find, cite, connect, and use research. DataCite members make their datasets and other research outputs findable, accessible and citable by registering DOIs. Importantly, registered DOIs have associated metadatas.

As a community-driven organization, we continue to focus and explore use cases with our members. The persistent identification and citation of scientific instruments is a particular use case that continues to gain momentum across community stakeholders. The capacity to uniquely identify an instrument is critical for the community to gather contextual information and interpret the related data accordingly.
