While this was not the primary hack project during the ELIXIR BioHackathon Europe last autumn, but I really like BioHackrXiv and I got the question if I could have a look at getting the ORCID logo in generated PDF. The ORCID was already in the YAML metadata of report markdown, so it sounded easy.

This week, I took some time out to read Elly Griffith’s most recent book, The Frozen People. I thought this sounded quite an interesting genre-fusing novel, welding together detective fiction and SF/time travel. Sure, it’s hardly the first to do so, but it sounded worth a read. I’d met the author a few years’ back through a mutual connection: Lesley Thompson, another British crime writer.

Here we are most of the way through March and I’m just getting around to my first “weekly” recap. It’s been a busy month — I’m writing a few papers of my own which I’ll share here when they’re published, and I took some much needed R&R in Portugal where I traded my stack of research papers for some escapist sci-fi. But I’m back now and making my way through a deep backlog.

Our recently published LIFE biodiversity metric has just been integrated into a newly recognised Official Statistic from the UK government! This integrates the core LIFE biodiversity metric with food provenance data to track the environmental impacts of our consumption habits. I must admit that I'd not heard of "Official Statistics" before this, so I did a bit of research.
