I am very happy to be giving a keynote on October 22nd at the LundOnline conference, which, despite its name, will take place in person in Sweden. The conference’s theme is Turning policy into practice – opportunities and consequences for stakeholders in scholarly communication , and accordingly, my presentation will focus on the role of policies in Open Access.

TL;DR : For a very simple analysis (means by group on 100M rows), duckdb was 125x faster than base R, and 28x faster than readr+dplyr, without having to read data from disk into memory. The duckplyr package wraps DuckDB's analytical query processing techniques in a dplyr-compatible API.

After some time away from cloud computing (due to my new focus on conservation research), I served on the ACM SOCC 2024 program committee. It was quite interesting seeing the massive shift away from "traditional" cloud research (such as consensus protocols) towards many submissions aimed at accelerating machine learning workloads.
