DataCite is a global community of organisations with a mission to connect research and advance knowledge. On December 8, 2023 we reached the important milestone of 3000 Repository accounts (“Repositories”) held by our Direct Members and Consortium Organizations. The journey to 3000 DataCite Repositories reflects the increasing importance of using Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to share diverse research outputs and resources.

In 2020, the DataCite General Assembly approved the introduction of consortium membership, where a group of like-minded organizations come together to collectively participate in DataCite’s community and governance activities and use DataCite’s DOI services.

As of January 1, 2025, DataCite Members and Consortium Organizations will be required to use Schema 4 to register DOIs and update DOI metadata. Widespread adoption of Schema 4 is critical to improve DOI metadata quality. This is because Schema 4—i.e., versions 4.0 through 4.4 and subsequent minor versions—improves on Schema 3 with additions that promote metadata quality and consistency.

Growing Together in Community Our community is experiencing robust growth, marked by growth in member repositories and a remarkable increase in DOI registrations.

As an open infrastructure organization committed to advancing knowledge, there are always many actions you can take. The key is to decide which initiatives and collaborations are of particular relevance at a given time. Based on our mission and vision, DataCite actively engages in a variety of initiatives, collaborating with different community stakeholders to advance open science and knowledge sharing.

Implementing FAIR Workflows: A Proof of Concept Study in the Field of Consciousness is a 3-year project funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. In this project, DataCite works with a number of partners on providing an exemplar workflow that researchers can use to implement FAIR practices throughout their research lifecycle.

DataCite is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable research landscape, dedicated to enhancing accessibility and empowering underrepresented regions to fully leverage and benefit from our open infrastructure. In February 2023, we launched a Global Access Program (GAP) with support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

STM, DataCite, and Crossref are pleased to announce an updated joint statement on research data. In 2012, DataCite and STM drafted an initial joint statement on the linkability and citability of research data.

Hello from Sweden! I’m Sara El-Gebali, and I’m excited to be joining DataCite’s Engagement team as a Metadata Specialist. It’s a new chapter for me, one in which I’ll engage with the dynamic world of Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) and be part of their global influence. One of the projects I am most excited to be joining is PID4NFDI, where I can work with the community shaping the PID landscape both nationally and internationally.

At DataCite, we enable DOI registration for a wide variety of research outputs: from samples and images to data and preprints. In this post, we’ll spotlight the resource types that our community is using DataCite DOIs for. The DataCite Metadata Schema has always supported a range of resource types.
