Data Repository Selection: Which Criteria Matter?

Data citation is core to DataCite’s mission and DataCite is involved in several projects that try to facilitate data citation, including THOR, Data Citation Implementation Pilot (DCIP), Research Data Alliance (RDA), and COPDESS. The biggest roadblock for wider data citation adoption might be insufficient incentives for individual researchers, but another major challenge is that implementing data citation is still too complicated.

It is with mixed feelings that I announce that our Executive Director, Trisha Cruse, plans to retire later this year. I’m sad that Trisha will be leaving us, grateful for all the work Trisha has done for DataCite, but also happy that our friend and colleague will be able to take on new life adventures.  As many of you will know, Trisha has been with DataCite from day one. Trisha was there when on December 1, 2009 DataCite was founded in London.

CSV (comma-separated values) is a popular file format for data. It is popular because it is very simple: CSV is text-based and any application that can open text files can read or write CSV. This makes it a good fit for digital preservation. We don’t know how many of the datasets in DataCite use CSV because the format metadata attribute is not used much (this query gives you some examples), but we know that the number is big.

The DataCite Metadata Schema is the basis for the metadata you submit to DataCite. It tells you the available fields and structure for your metadata records. Many of our members have told us that they’d really like to be able to include affiliation information in their metadata in a more structured way. Today DataCite launches a new API that powers the PID Graph, the graph formed by scholarly resources described by persistent identifiers (PIDs) and the connections between them. CSV in many ways is for data what Markdown is for text documents: a very simple format that is both human- and machine-readable, and that – despite a number of shortcomings – is widely used. Persistent identifiers (PIDs) are not only important to uniquely identify a publication, dataset, or person, but the metadata for these persistent identifiers can provide unambiguous linking between persistent identifiers of the same type, e.g. journal articles citing other journal articles, or of different types, e.g. linking a researcher and the datasets they produced.

DataCite is pleased to announce our newest service. The link checker is here! Many of you have asked for an automated link checking service to help you maintain your DOI records, and it’s now out of the box and ready for Members to use.  The link checker is a custom-built crawler (based on the popular open-source tool Scrapy) that works its way through one DOI per DataCite Client per day and attempts to follow the URL registered in the metadata.

DataCite welcomed over 370 participants from almost 300 institutions across 59 countries to our Annual Community Meeting on 25 September 2024.  The DataCite Community Meeting was held across 10 sessions in three blocks and spanning all time zones, with some sessions repeated to give a regional focus.

Metadata forms the backbone of open scholarly infrastructure, enabling the discoverability, accessibility, and understanding of research outputs and resources. When repositories register Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) with DataCite, they use the DataCite Metadata Schema to describe each research output or resource.

DataCite Connections: A Case Study on FAIR Island Project Metadata

PIDfest, jointly organized by NTK and ARDC, was held from June 11 -13 in Prague. The event brought together persistent identifier (PID) advocates, users, and leaders from around the world to solve real-world infrastructure challenges to accelerate research and innovation.
