Manual curation is vital for maintaining quality information in biological databases. However, with the exponential growth in biological data this approach is both challenging and time consuming. We wanted to create a scalable and sustainable process which could complement manual curation.

A new online open access journal from Nature Publishing Group, Scientific Reports, is now live. The journal is a primary research publication covering all areas of the natural sciences.

This month, Europe PMC released a new version of SciLite, a powerful tool for highlighting annotations in life sciences publications. SciLite is powered by the Europe PMC annotation platform via the open annotation API, which provides access to over 1.3 billion annotations.

In September 2019 we welcomed the first open, global grant IDs to Europe PMC. Wellcome became the first funder to register DOIs for their grant awards with Crossref. Grant metadata is provided by Europe PMC, and in a pilot integration, the grant IDs were featured in a PLOS ONE publication.

Recently Europe PMC released new export format options, to help users get Europe PMC’s wealth of metadata (and our open access papers) into the file formats they like to use. We’ve already posted about how useful this function is for researchers, but it’s great for research funders too.

Recently Europe PMC released new export format options, to help users get Europe PMC’s wealth of metadata (and our open access papers) into the file formats they like to use. We’ve already posted about how useful this function is for researchers, but it’s great for research funders too. Funders can convert their carefully constructed search into a tab separated file and use Excel to manipulate the metadata as they wish.

Compared to preprints, publishing is like waiting for your favourite band to drop a new album. Whether it takes months or years, it can feel like an eternity. Preprints are a scientific equivalent of a surprise single release – an early version of a research paper prior to peer review. Born in the 1960s in the physics domain, preprints gave researchers a way to share their work with the world in real time.

How we built a database of preprints

Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC) is an open access repository of life science research, including peer-reviewed journal articles and preprints. It contains over 41 million abstracts and 8.7 million full-text articles, adding over 1.7 million new articles annually. To facilitate information discovery and foster literature–data integration, Europe PMC has incorporated text-mining approaches into its workflows.
