Students of programming are often encouraged to use AI assistants with little consideration for their perceptions and preferences. How do students perceptions influence their usage of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in undergraduate programming courses? How does the use of tools like ChatGPT and GitHub CoPilot relate to students self-belief in their own programming abilities?

Despite having done a lot of research on democracy, I have not written much about it here. Given that we are reaching the climax of a big year of elections, I thought it would be useful to share some of my conclusions on democracy and its enduring value. To understand what an existential crisis for modern democracy looks like, we should turn to early 1941.

With the fervour of someone with an n = 1 positive experience, I thought I’d write about what I learned from a recent writing retreat. My University organises one-day events to encourage writing. They’re on-campus, in the neutral territory of the Library, so perhaps calling them “writing retreats” is a little far-fetched. Nonetheless, the idea is to provide a time and space for people to achieve some writing.
