I have not posted a lot about our Virtual Human Platform for Safety Assessment (VHP4Safety) project yet. Actually, more generally I do not post frequently about the funded projects. This is likely that few of them are Open Science by contract and often they have some formal process in place to approve output. That makes open notebook science-style posting about these projects hard. One is restricted to previously cleared material.

The post critiques the paper “Uncertainty limits the use of power analysis”. It highlights issues with power analysis because of uncertainty deriving from sampling variability and fluctuating population effect sizes. While acknowledging valid points, I believe the paper’s conclusions are overly dismissive and argue for a refined approach to power and sample size estimation, if one accepts that uncertainty is a problem.

This week in GigaScience we published a new genomic analysis of the endangered Oriental Stork, bringing good news: The population’s genetic health is still surprisingly strong, with high genetic diversity and low levels of inbreeding. Climate change, forest wildfires, hunting and the expansion of agriculture, industry and other human activities threaten the Oriental Stork ( Ciconia boyciana ), which is listed as

I have been working as a Director General at the KB for almost two months now. Just too early for an overall reflection, but also already that long that I can say that it feels very good to walk around the building, talk to the colleagues in the KB, and slowly (that is far from finished!) get to know the networks and organizations. The KB is the national library of the Netherlands and is there for everyone.
