DataCite is a global community of research organizations with a common purpose. As part of this effort and aligned with our multi-year strategy, we launched a pilot to help our community track awards and related outputs. During the pilot, we registered award DOIs, coordinated on common challenges, established clear community guidelines, and will now work to improve our existing services to better support use cases.

Before joining DataCite, I was a software development engineer at Cambia Health Solutions. I worked on a large-scale care gap management engine that assists health professionals in identifying gaps in member care, allowing them to provide better coverage.

Following  pillar one of our strategic plan: “Provide easy, efficient and responsive community services to support the needs of our community”, we simplified the prefix assignment workflow. Introduction

We are happy to announce that we have improved the prefix assignment workflow in Fabrica. Following  pillar one of our strategic plan: “Provide easy, efficient and responsive community services to support the needs of our community”, we simplified the prefix assignment workflow. The new process gives more autonomy to our members when setting up repositories in Fabrica.

International Data Week (IDW) 2022 has come to an end, and at DataCite we made sure we celebrated data the whole week! IDW is a community event that brings together the global data community to discuss how to improve research and society through data sharing and reuse.

Earlier this year, DataCite and IGSN announced their roadmap towards a partnership to support the global adoption, implementation, and use of physical sample identifiers. Today, we are pleased to share the announcement of the partnership agreement. DataCite is a community-led organisation with a vision to connect research and identify knowledge.

This year we relaunched DataCite Open Hours, keeping the same focus on community interaction, but also incorporating a section for gathering structured feedback for the DataCite product roadmap and metadata schema. We don’t record Open Hours because we want to create an informal and relaxed environment where everyone can ask questions and share ideas with the presenters and other attendees.

The first strategic priority of DataCite’s vision 2021 is “Building on the DataCite identity. With the publication of the DataCite design manual, we are now taking the first step in our journey to create a consistent visual identity for our organization. In the past couple of months, together with designers, we worked on a variety of aspects of our design.

Four weeks have passed since the DataCite Member Meeting 2021. On September 21 2021, the DataCite Team, our members, and the PID community met virtually and discussed topics ranging from DataCite’s strategic visioning process, the product roadmap and metadata, to the world of PIDs. Leveraging the advantages of an online event, we shared the recordings and slides of the sessions one week later.

DataCite is a DOI registration agency that enables the registration of scholarly content with a persistent identifier (DOI) and metadata. This content can then be searched for, reused, and connected to other scholarly resources. But how does the underlying infrastructure enable this? In this blog post, we will describe what we have built to make this work. This is a fairly technical post, as I tried to go a little deeper into the details.

What is next? Launching our Strategic Visioning Process

The DataCite EZ API was first introduced in 2017 to assist those of our Members who transitioned from the California Digital Library (CDL) EZID service. Users were able to make the same API calls they used to make to EZID, just using the DataCite endpoint instead. This was introduced as a temporary solution to support easy transition of services. Finally, 4 years later, it is time to retire the DataCite EZ API.

DataCite Open Hours are an opportunity for anyone in the community to hear the latest updates, ask questions and engage with DataCite staff and other community members. Sometimes there’s even a festive pub quiz! Open Hours also provides an informal, interactive forum to learn from and share with the DataCite community and gather feedback for our roadmap, which is essential to our mission.

As 2020 comes to a close, we reflect back on a year of global uncertainty and many challenges faced by our entire community. It can only be described as a year of the unexpected, and it demonstrated the importance of communities working together. Despite the challenges we faced this year, DataCite also had a year with lots to celebrate and it is important to reflect on some of the highlights.
