Dear all, I just wanted to take a moment to send a message of solidarity, empathy, and understanding. It is not clear what if anything we will leave behind for whom, what for, how long- it is not clear if we will have the right. Instead, even the rain  stops falling for a while and  filters through the cracks drops do drip and drip, brown into a marmalade jar, bricks rotting away  (since the distant past) Everybody is out and about and you are cocooned, indoors shrouded by sirens, and echoes.

haven’t posted anything here in a while. The pandemic, changes in the social media ecosystem and a heavy workload have kept me away from this blog. Aramaic: from טרק‎  to hit, sting,  bite,  close a door,  mix. Talmud: pakia?  What is a  madra? Rav Papa  says:  An Arabian whip  whose end is split. Suena la matraca noisy, fun, old. Every  sound comes  from somewhere else. What fortunes will the racket bring?

I’d like to dedicate this version to my mother and my sister, who are fluent in the languages of love, care, and mourning.

It’s been a while since I translated a poem. One morning while doing something else, you randomly take a book from the shelves, open it and find a poem that speaks to you, and calls you to translate it, in order to share it with others who also share your mother tongue.

What does “learning to live with the virus” really mean?

T

his week I had to go in my local GP surgery in London. I wondered if they would soon be removing the “Stop Coronavirus! Covid-19. Please wear your face mask” signage they have visible outside and inside. Working from home long hours, I haven’t really gone out much at all, and seeing the signs again made me reflect what a simple gesture that was, merely asking us to please wear a facemask.

turned 45 this year during lockdown (yikes!). Working from home and spending most ‘free’ time at home has meant there’s been some space for reflection, including remembrance of times past.
