Appalachian Figures Charles McElroy White grew up in the logging and rail hamlet of Hutton on the outskirts of Oakland, Maryland. He went on to lead one of the nation’s largest steelmakers during the most turbulent decades of American industrial history. Explanatory text should thus be complemented by interactive visualizations and computational demonstrations, allowing the reader to actively engage with the ideas. That the arithmetic mean of a set of number is larger than the geometric mean is a foundational result in the theory of inequalities. This is a useful result for index numbers in particular as it gives that, for the same data, an index based on an arithmetic mean will always be larger than the corresponding index based on the geometric mean.
