A note on the personal significance of collecting and listening to records, comparing it to meditation. I use Walter Benjamin’s concept of “erfahrung” to argue for the unique experience afforded by physical music formats. Finally, I share a mix of vinyl records.

I

‘ve written here before about what it means to me to spend some time playing records and recording them the sessions to share later (also here). Taking the time to select, play, listen to and later rearrange and make recordings of my playing/listening sessions is for me akin to meditating, attentively watching a good film, reading a good book for pleasure or doing research.

Imagine the American chemist Wilbur Scoville, (who invented the method in 1912) cleverly devising the Scoville organoleptic test using a panel of tasters all given chili extract diluted in sugar water. There is a final heat unit.

he UK Covid-19 Inquiry was set up “to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and learn lessons for the future”. At the time of typing this, you can catch up with the developments from the coverage here, or directly from the video recordings here, if you find the time. The evidence that has been presented at the Inquiry is hugely significant, but it is, sadly, nothing truly new.

haven’t written here in a while, but it’s that time of the year. It’s also been a year since we moved to a house next to a Victorian cemetery. Before the clocks change, this week has had very dark mornings, and later in the day the light in the cemetery has been really beautiful.

Online Attention to Digital Humanities Publications (#DH2014 poster)

I

am very excited I will be presenting a poster I co-authored with my colleagues Leo Havemann (Birkbeck College) and Javiera Atenas (University College London) at the Digital Humanities 2014 conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, this Thursday 10 July 2014. Two #teachDH Outputs

It is not clear what if anything we will leave behind for whom, what for, how long- it is not clear if we will have the right. Instead, even the rain  stops falling for a while and  filters through the cracks drops do drip and drip, brown into a marmalade jar, bricks rotting away  (since the distant past) Everybody is out and about and you are cocooned, indoors shrouded by sirens, and echoes.
