The Open Access Button has mapped over 7500 paywalls! Button 2.0 Crowdfunding On April 22, we launched an Indiegogo campaign to crowdfund Button 2.0! We’re seeking to raise £20,000 to support the development of Button 2.0. Button 2.0 has been reimagined from the ground up to make it a true game changer. We’ve focused on creating ways to connect people with the research they need and use research in completely different ways.

What has been happening in the world of Open Access in the last week (or two)? On Wednesday (May 14, 2014), SPARC, EIFL, and COAR, among other open access movement efforts, have released statements expressing that the use of short-term embargoes to aid in protecting publishers’ revenues during their transition to other business models, is an acceptable transitional mechanism.

What has been happening in the world of Open Access in the last week? SPARC announces the theme for the 2014 International Open Access Week in October to be “Generation Open.” The event will highlight the importance of encouraging the younger population to become involved with the mainstream adoption of Open Access publishing. Young adults are a critical and vital target demographic for the Button.

What has been happening in the world of Open Access in the last week? The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge has said that ‘Elsevier are rich enough already’ Though the findings have not been pretty, theres been a very positive step forwards with data being released on what universities pay in journal fees. PLos Open synthesised the findings.

Yesterday we launched our crowdfunding campaign. A few hours after launch, visitors to our main website openaccessbutton.org recieved a message of “502 bad gateway error”. On the list of things you’d like to happen during the launch of a crowdfunding campaign this wasn’t exactly high.
