This is a contribution to the Challenge problem: Fearless extensibility by the Malleable Systems Collective. As superheroes know very well, with great power comes great responsibility. Malleable systems offer a lot of power to their users. In exchange, users have to take responsibility for the system they have tailored to their needs, since there is nobody else to blame.

The Section on Infectious Diseases and the Atrium Health Division of Infectious Diseases attended IDWeek 2024 in Los Angeles, CA and made a strong showing. Presentations and posters were presented by a variety of members including infectious diseases pharmacists, pharmacy residents, medical residents,infectious disease fellows, and infectious disease physicians.

After the pilot run of the Open and Reproducible Science in R module for IHTM Class 2021-2022, it was apparent based on student feedback that learning to code in R was something most of our students valued. As with other elements of the course, it is clear that more impactful learning happens when students use whatever they have learned on an actual analytic task.

Kristin Lauter and her colleagues at Facebook research recently announced a project to benchmark attacks against LWE. The announcement was on the post-quanum crypto mailing list. They state: “Our approach is motivated by the need to study more carefully the effect on security of using small secrets and small error in standardized LWE settings like Kyber and Homomorphic Encryption.

Some people have asked me to comment on the Scientific American article What if We Never Find Dark Matter? by Slatyer & Tait. For the most part, I find it unobjectionable – from a certain point of view.

Last year I got a bug report that Citation.js was not working when built in a Next.js production environment for unclear reasons. Next.js is a popular server framework to make web applications with React, and by default transforms all JavaScript files and their dependencies into “chunks” to improve page load times. In production environments, Next.js uses the Rust-based “Speedy Web Compiler” SWC to optimize and minify JavaScript code.
